Why I love Sports Days

Reffley Academy was the destination.
There’s something truly special about a school sports day. The sunshine (hopefully!), the cheers, the competitive spirit, the laughter – it’s a day where everything just feels right. For me, sports days are one of the most rewarding parts of the school year.

So, why do I love them so much?
First, it’s the families. Watching parents, carers, grandparents, and siblings come out to support their youngsters is a beautiful thing. Seeing children beam with pride as their loved ones cheer them on – whether they win or not – makes the whole day worthwhile. It’s not just about races or results; it’s about being active, having fun, and sharing that experience with friends and family.
One memory that sticks with me is sports day at Reffley Academy. The way the adults there support every single child is something to admire. Yes, most of the loudest cheers are for their own children (and rightly so!), but the encouragement doesn’t stop there. The applause, the smiles, and the words of support for every participant really show what a caring, community-driven school it is. That atmosphere brings people together – not just on the track, but as a school family.
And then there’s the staff. The teamwork it takes to run a smooth sports day shouldn’t be underestimated. From group coordinators making sure every child knows where to go, to those tracking scores, managing heats, and awarding places – it’s a real team effort. Every role matters. And what I love is that it’s not just the children showing team spirit – it’s the whole school workforce pulling together to deliver an incredible experience.
The Reffley Academy Sports Day is so well-organised and full of heart, it goes in my diary very early every year. It’s a day that reminds me why I do what I do. A day full of energy, inclusion, and shared celebration.
Thanks for Reading.
